It turns out, the relationship between gourds and cardinal directions is more complex than Xinhua dictionary can make us believe, as 北瓜 is not only a synonym for 南瓜, but is also sometimes used to denote a kind of gourd that I have problems identifying, and there also exists 東瓜 which is a common misspelling of 冬瓜 (wax gourd). With addition of a watermelon and a lovely pumpkin we can have enough gourds for a compass, which I drew here.
